U20 World Cup: Echoes of 2005 final as Flying Eagles face Argentina in Round of 16

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will face hosts Argentina in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U20 World Cup on Wednesday as the competition enters its business end.

With six titles in the bag, Argentina are the most successful nation in the competition, and stopped Nigeria from lifting the title in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 2005 when a Lionel Messi-inspired side won 2-1. Messi scored both goals in the 40th and 75th minutes (both from the spot) while Chinedu Ogbuke’s 53rd minute goal did not matter in the end.

In Argentina 2023, the Round of 16 fixtures with see United States take on New Zealand and Uzbekistan versus Israel, both on Tuesday.

Brazil, who won Nigeria’s Group D, will be challenged by Tunisia, while Colombia against Slovakia, and an all Europe-clash England versus Italy are the other games on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s match comes up  at 10 pm.
