One week after the United States (U.S) Embassy in Abuja issued security alerts to its citizens in Nigeria over a planned protest in Abuja following the current conflict with Iran, the Embassy yesterday issued another warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.

The Embassy advised travelers to take extra precautions, including varying times and routes when visiting the U.S. Embassy, Consulate General in Lagos, and affiliated schools, as well as increasing awareness of their surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with family to reduce their risk.

Other measures suggested by the alert include: Keep a low profile, keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency, stay alert in public places, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and familiarise yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings.

Last week, the Embassy had cancelled all visa appointments earlier scheduled for Wednesday due to high potential for protests in Abuja following the current conflict with Iran. It noted that previous protests by some groups over the ongoing conflict have resulted in violent clashes between the groups and Nigerian security forces.
