The Chairman of Women Rights Protection Alternative (WRAPA), Alhaji Muhammad Kanya, has said the group has secured the prosecution and convictions of no fewer than 50 rapists in two special courts established to try cases of rape and other gender-based violence in the state.
According to him, “The decision to skip conventional courts in the cases of rape and gender-based or domestic violence cases was to put a stop to delayed judgments from conventional courts, which allow some parents of victims or those of the offenders to seek out of court settlement to kill the cases, hence the reason we got the backing of the state government for the establishments of two special courts in Birnin Kebbi and Jega”.
He explained that to further boost their operations, the wife of Kebbi State governor, Zainab Nasare has opened a victims rehabilitation and treatment centre in Jega town with operational vehicles to cover the 21 local government areas in the state.
