The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied having former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in his custody.

Media reports on Wednesday had stated Bello, who had failed to honour the commission’s invitations, had turned himself in to the anti-graft agency.

But EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Dele Oyewale issued a statement on the commission’s verified X account said the reports are incorrect.

“The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.

“Bello, already declared wanted by the commission for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest”.

Several reports attributed Bello’s purported visit to the EFCC to his media office.

According to the statement by Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, the former governor’s decision to appear before the anti-graft agency comes after consultations with his family, legal team, and political associates.

The former governor has been in a running battle with the anti-graft agency over alleged financial impropriety while he was the governor.

He and three others are facing 19 counts related to money laundering to the tune of N80.2 billion

In April, the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede vowed to resign if the embattled former governor is not prosecuted.

He swore to follow Bello’s prosecution to the logical conclusion, and that all those who obstructed the arrest of the former governor would be brought to justice.
