The Yobe State Government has issued a fresh flood alert to nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) due to the impending release of water from the Dadin Kowa and Lagdo dams. The LGAs are Nguru, Bade, Karasuwa, Jakusko, Yusufari, Geidam, Tarmuwa, Bursari, Machina, Gujba and Fune.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of the state Emergency Management Agency, Dr Mohammed Goje warned that the release of water from the two dams would add to the predicaments of residents of the areas who were already affected by recent flooding triggered by torrential rains.
He said: “Yobe experienced significant flooding between 15 April and 9 September 2024, causing widespread devastation across several LGAs.
“This advisory serves as an early warning alert for further flooding due to the impending discharge of water from Dadin Kowa Dam, Hadejia-Jama’are River, River Kamodugu and Lagdo Dam in Cameroon”.
It was gathered that over 19,000 households across 432 communities had so far been hit by floods in the state.
