Florence Olarinoye, 13, showed her class in the 49kg women’s weightlifting event as she claimed all three gold medals for Team Lagos on Day 2 of the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State capital, on Sunday.
The younger sister of African and Commonwealth Games champion, Adijat was way ahead of her opponents as she claimed all three gold medals for her state.
She lifted 56kg in snatch and had an impressive 72kg lift in clean and jerk totaling 128kg to win the medals.
Olarinoye won bronze medal in the 45kg class at the 2022 National Sports Festival, also in Asaba, last December.
The Federal Capital Territory won all the silver medals after Marvelous Ibeh lifted 53kg in snatch, 67kg clean and jerk and 120kg in total.
Bayelsa went home with all three bronze medals courtesy of Christianah Adefemi, who lifted 48kg in snatch, 65kg in clean and jerk and 104kg in total to place third.
In the football event, Team Delta said they have protested the ages of Team Kaduna players after the latter humiliated his side 5-0 on Sunday.
Head coach of Delta football team, Gordon Ogbe said: “We have already sent our protest to the appropriate quarters. The players of Team Kaduna are far older in age and bigger in size”.
He said that Team Kaduna players did not undergo the normal screening of players following their late arrival to Asaba.
“Team Kaduna did not go through the rigorous screening exercises other states underwent. Team Delta was screened with the use of the National Identification Number and that left us with only 12 players against Team Kaduna’s 18 players who didn’t pass through the screening.
“Other states are also protesting against Team Kaduna players”, Ogbe alleged.
Also, Team Lagos hammered Delta 5-0 in the women’s football event in a game the hosts had only 12 players.
