The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, has disclosed that more than 1,150 Nigerians have studied in French universities and higher institutions over the years, praising their creativity and contributions to various sectors, particularly in sustainability and innovation.
Fonbaustier made the disclosure during a cocktail reception on Thursday evening in Abuja held to mark the global France Alumni Day, an annual celebration of international graduates from French institutions.
The event showcased Nigerian alumni excelling in fields like fashion, art, environmental sustainability, and French gastronomy.
Speaking to journalists at the event, Fonbaustier commended the entrepreneurial spirit of young Nigerians who, after studying in France, returned home to launch meaningful ventures and drive social impact.
‘You’ll be surprised to learn that the total number of Nigerian alumni who studied in France is around 1,150. Some returned to Nigeria to contribute locally, while others remained in France under employment contracts.
‘In a nutshell, we have young Nigerians who studied in France and came back to launch businesses, contribute to national development, and accomplish their destiny’, Fonbaustier said.
A standout highlight of the evening was the recognition of 17 Nigerian alumni recently awarded for their innovative plastic recycling project aimed at tackling environmental challenges through sustainable practices.
‘These alumni are part of a broader initiative on recycling plastic waste — turning environmental threats into useful products. It reflects how knowledge transfer and innovation can thrive across borders.
It’s a diverse and inclusive network that mirrors the rich cultural tapestry of Nigeria, he stated.
The ambassador also noted the geographic spread of alumni, with many based in Lagos and southern Nigeria, a trend he attributed to job opportunities and the concentration of businesses in those regions
