2 dead, 20 injured in Portugal bus crash

Two women were killed and 20 other people injured after a bus crashed in the suburbs of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, emergency authorities have confirmed.

According to police, the two victims were standing at a bus stop waiting for the vehicle when they were struck during the crash.

Francisco Alves, police chief for the western area of Sintra, told local media that the victims were hit while waiting for the bus.

Emergency services identified the deceased as women aged 30 and 40.

Authorities said 20 other people sustained injuries in the incident, with three reported to be in a serious condition.

Emergency responders, including psychological support teams, were deployed to the scene to assist victims and those affected by the crash.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro expressed sadness over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

Reacting in a post on X, the Prime Minister said he received news of the accident with “great dismay” and wished those injured a swift and full recovery.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the crash, and investigations are ongoing.
