36 years after, Morocco aim at FIFA World Cup knockout phase

After the exit of Tunisia on Wednesday despite beating reigning champions France by a lone goal, it’s the turn of Morocco and Cameroon to give Africa something to cheer again at Qatar 2022. Continental champions Senegal are already through to the last eight of the FIFA World Cup, waiting for England on Sunday.

Morocco are looking to qualify from the group stage for the first time since Mexico 1986 but face a Canada team determined to earn their first point, or points, at the FIFA World Cup.

The Atlas Lions are level on points with Group F leaders Croatia on account of goal difference. Playing eliminated Canada, coach Walid Regragui must avoid complaency. Any other result except victory may be dangerous as third placed Belgium are only a point behind.

Canada came to Qatar 2022 with John Herdman and his men looking to prove a point — that Canadian football was worthy of the world stage. While they remain pointless, Canada went toe-to-toe with one of the favourites, Belgium before shocking 2018 runners-up Croatia by taking an early lead. They have certainly played their part.

In the event of Belgium and Croatia settling for a draw and Canada shocking even themselves, Morocco will be eliminated. So, victory is what is safest for Morocco.

Belgium struggled to beat Canada by just a goal and then suffered a 0-2 setback against Morocco. The Roberto Martinez squad must justify their rating as the No 2 team in the FIFA ranking by dealing squarely with Croatia.

The winners here will meet the runners-up in Group E, which will be either Spain, Japan or Costa Rica in the Round of 16.

In Group E, Spain will be aiming at cementing their leadership as they take on No 2 Japan at Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan. Both sides are separated by a point, and have Costa Rica on their heels. Champions in 2010, the European champions are one of the tournament’s favourites.

In the other group game, Germany, who lost their opening match 1-2 to Japan and forced a 1-1 result against Spain in their next fixture, will want to put their mystery behind them and prove doubters wrong.

The fixtures…

Group F: Croatia v Belgium, Canada v Morocco (both 5 pm WAT)

Group E: Costa Rica v Germany, Japan v Spain (both 8 pm)
