The Chairman, Awka South LGA of Anambra, Mr Chinedu Okafor, says the council has embarked on measures to crackdown on drug abuse and illegal drug business in the area.
Okafor disclosed this on Monday, while briefing newsmen on the steps so far taken by the council to curb the drug menace in the area.
He decried the ‘alarming increase’ in the sale and consumption of hard drugs in the area, including cocaine, heroin, tramadol and crystal methamphetamine, otherwise called ‘Mkpuru Mmiri’.
‘Our priority is to safeguard public health, restore order and ensure the safety of our residents.
‘We urge every member of the communities in Awka South to reject illicit drug sales and consumption and support efforts to build a healthier and safer local government area’, he said.
The chairman disclosed that the council was collaborating with security agencies to commence full-scale crackdown on illicit drug peddlers and consumers in the area.
He warned those that indulge in drug abuse and illegal drug activities to desist forthwith or be ready to face the full wrath of the law.
