Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has submitted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) nomination form for his 2027 presidential ambition.

The former vice-president shared a post on his X page, accompanied by photos and a video showing him at the ADC national headquarters in Abuja to submit the form.

‘The march to restore prosperity and better days to our beloved nation took a firm and decisive step forward today at the National Secretariat of our great party, the African Democratic Congress’, he wrote.

‘This is more than a political journey; it is a national movement rooted in hope, renewal, and the collective resolve to save Nigeria from despair’.

He appealed to Nigerians regardless of region, faith, or background, to join him in the ‘noble cause’, saying, ‘Together, we will restore the promise of our nation and bring good times back again’.

Abubakar has contested for Nigeria’s highest office six times, although he has appeared on the presidential ballot as a candidate on three occasions — in 2007, 2019, and 2023.

He contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but finished second in the election with 6,984,520 votes behind President Bola Tinubu, who won with 8,794,726 votes.

Before the 2023 general election, the former-vice president had contested for Nigeria’s presidency five times, dating back to 1993 when he ran under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In 2007, Atiku was the presidential candidate of the Action Congress (AC), but finished third in the election behind late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

He also contested for the PDP presidential ticket in 2011 alongside former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was the incumbent president, but eventually lost the ticket to Jonathan.

In 2015, the former vice-president made another shot at the presidency, contesting under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

But he lost at the party’s primaries to Buhari, who went ahead to defeat Jonathan in the election.

Atiku later returned to pick the PDP’s presidential ticket in 2019, winning at the party’s primaries to contest against Buhari, who was declared winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
