Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, announcing his bid at a Peoples Democratic Party–Allied Peoples’ Movement (PDP–APM) rally held in Ibadan
Makinde made the announcement on Thursday before a crowd of party supporters, stakeholders, and political allies, turning the event into a major political statement ahead of the next general election cycle.
The rally also featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the PDP and APM to strengthen political cooperation. The agreement was signed at the PDP South-West Secretariat in Ibadan, the state capital, with Makinde and APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle representing both parties.
Makinde said his decision to run was driven by the need to strengthen governance and build on national progress.
‘This is a decision driven by the need to serve Nigeria and ensure continued development’, he said.
The governor’s declaration is expected to reshape political calculations within the PDP as consultations intensify ahead of party primaries and wider electoral negotiations.
Political observers say Makinde’s entry into the race positions him as a key contender in early 2027 presidential permutations, particularly within opposition coalition discussions.
Supporters at the rally described the announcement as a bold step that signals renewed momentum within opposition politics.
Further reactions are expected as political stakeholders respond to his formal entry into the presidential race.
