Many feared dead as terrorists, bandits clash in Niger

Heavy fighting has reportedly erupted between suspected Lakurawa fighters and armed bandits in the Tapkin Giyayya area of Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, with both sides said to have suffered casualties.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a report shared on his official X account, stating that the confrontation followed the movement of a group of armed bandits from forest hideouts in Zamfara State into the Mashegu Forest through the Tudun Magaji axis.

According to the report, the armed groups engaged in a fierce gun battle that left several fighters dead, while others reportedly escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

Residents of the area were quoted as saying the exchange of gunfire lasted for some time before the wounded fighters retreated from the scene.

The exact number of those killed or injured has not been independently confirmed.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
