President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to using emerging technologies to combat security threats and protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

The President said his government was accelerating the modernisation of the Armed Forces through investments in military equipment and the development of personnel capacity to enhance operational planning and combat readiness.

Tinubu spoke on Monday at the grand finale of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration and African Land Forces Forum (ALFF) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The event was themed “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army.”

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, venue of the event, that his administration would continue to support intelligence-led and technology-based operations to address insecurity across the country.

“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces, thereby improving operational planning and combat readiness,” he said.

Tinubu identified sustained research and development as a key part of his strategy to advance military technology and promote local innovation.

He said the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), alongside partnerships such as the ALFF, would support local production of military equipment, create skilled employment opportunities and strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities.

The President said previous administrations had attempted to revive DICON but added that his government was determined to achieve the objective in order to modernise the Army and improve its ability to respond to contemporary security challenges.

He described the establishment of the ALFF as a significant development and commended Great Minds Event Management for supporting Nigeria’s defence diplomacy efforts and promoting cooperation, innovation and strategic dialogue among African countries.

Tinubu praised the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing them as “a model of selfless service to the people and a source of pride across the African continent.”

He said the military’s efforts to tackle security threats beyond Nigeria’s borders represented a contribution to global peace and stability.

The President also honoured fallen soldiers, assuring their families that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

“Their courage lives in the freedom we breathe, and the families they left behind remain a sacred responsibility of this nation,” he said.

Tinubu commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, and Great Minds Event Management for organising the maiden joint event, saying the collaboration had strengthened regional and global cooperation in defence and security.

Earlier, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara said hosting the event was significant for the state as it demonstrated peace and stability, contrary to negative perceptions previously associated with the region.

He praised the Nigerian Army’s leadership and personnel, while urging the Federal Government to continue improving the welfare of military personnel.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army remained committed to protecting the country’s territorial integrity and safeguarding citizens in line with the theme of the celebration.

Shaibu acknowledged the evolving security environment and said emerging threats had required adjustments in operational strategies. He praised officers and soldiers across various theatres of operation for their dedication and sacrifices.

The Army Chief expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his support and pledged the continued loyalty of officers and personnel to the administration.

The event featured the presentation of Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards, as well as military demonstrations and displays by various Army units and formations.

Among those present were former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (retd.); former President Olusegun Obasanjo; Minister of Defence Lieutenant General Christopher Musa; Minister of State for Regional Development Uba Maigari Ahmadu; Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Aneke; members of the National Assembly; former service chiefs; and senior military officers.
