Nigerian troops have arrested a suspected foreign operative linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) following a failed terrorist attack on Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the suspect, believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin, was apprehended during follow-up operations after troops successfully repelled a coordinated assault by insurgents in the area.

The report stated that after forcing the attackers to retreat, troops launched exploitation and pursuit operations along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes.

During the exercise conducted on Monday, soldiers reportedly recovered additional operational materials abandoned by the fleeing insurgents, including high-frequency hand-held radios and other communication equipment considered vital to the group’s command and control structure.

According to the publication, intelligence obtained from the recovered items enabled troops to expand their search operations deep into the Lake Chad Islands axis and towards Abadam Local Government Area.

The operation eventually led to the arrest of the suspected foreign operative, who had reportedly come under intelligence scrutiny following forensic analysis of video footage recovered from a camcorder seized after the Cross Kauwa encounter.

The camcorder was said to belong to a terrorist cameraman who was killed during the failed attack.

Security sources noted that extremist groups frequently deploy media operatives alongside combat teams to record attacks for propaganda, recruitment and operational assessment purposes.

Investigators reportedly used footage recovered from the device to identify the Moroccan suspect.

Following his arrest, the suspect was airlifted by the Nigerian Air Force to a secure military facility, where he is currently undergoing interrogation and intelligence exploitation.

Military authorities are expected to investigate his role within the terrorist network, how he entered Nigeria, his connections to ISIS’ transnational operations and any involvement in training, operational planning or media activities for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The arrest has been described as a significant intelligence breakthrough that could provide fresh insights into the structure, financing and international links of terrorist organisations operating in the Lake Chad Basin.

The report also reinforced longstanding assessments by security agencies that foreign nationals continue to play supporting roles in extremist activities in the region, particularly in areas such as training, communications, media production, explosives handling and strategic coordination.

While ISWAP is largely made up of local fighters from communities around the Lake Chad Basin, intelligence reports over the years have indicated the presence of foreign facilitators from countries including Iraq, Somalia and Morocco, serving as technical specialists connected to the wider Islamic State network.

Military sources said the interrogation of the suspect is ongoing and that additional details cannot yet be disclosed for operational security reasons. They added that information obtained from the suspect could assist ongoing counter-terrorism operations, identify additional terrorist cells and expose cross-border movement routes used by insurgent groups.
