The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has risen to more than 5,000, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said on Friday.

Rodriguez, in a post on Telegram, said 5,069 people were confirmed dead following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, which struck within a minute of each other on 24 June.

The powerful tremors devastated the coastal state of La Guaira, north of the capital, Caracas, with the majority of fatalities recorded in the region.

The number of injured remains unchanged at 16,740. Rodriguez had earlier said that most of those injured had since been discharged from hospital.

About 20,000 people displaced by the earthquakes are still living in overcrowded camps, many of which lack adequate water supplies and proper sanitation facilities.
