Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the country’s ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishyna, in a move that follows a government reshuffle announced last month.
The decision, confirmed in a presidential decree on Monday, comes as Ukraine continues to lobby Washington for additional Patriot air defence systems to counter intensified Russian missile and drone attacks.
In a post on Facebook, Stefanishyna said she had requested to be relieved of her duties, describing the decision as one driven by personal circumstances. She also shared a copy of her letter seeking her dismissal.
She described her appointment as Ukraine’s envoy to the United States as “the greatest honour” of her life, saying her tenure had coincided with a challenging period in relations with Washington.
“We increased the supply of American weapons and maintained support precisely when the political climate in Washington was shifting against us,” she said.
Stefanishyna, who previously served as Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, was appointed ambassador to Washington in July 2025.
The post is regarded as one of Ukraine’s most strategically important diplomatic assignments, given the country’s dependence on United States military assistance and intelligence support in its ongoing war with Russia.
Relations between President Zelensky and United States President Donald Trump have experienced periods of tension. However, recent interactions have suggested a more constructive approach by the US leader towards Kyiv.
According to Ukrainian media reports, Stefanishyna is under investigation by the country’s anti-corruption agency over allegations of misconduct. She has not been formally charged with any offence.
President Zelensky has yet to name a successor to lead Ukraine’s diplomatic mission in Washington.
