The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ruled out any further extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise despite calls from opposition political parties and civil society organisations.
INEC’s Deputy Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television.
According to him, the electoral commission has concluded the registration exercise and cannot extend the deadline further.
“So we just have to stop the exercise. So for those who are unable to meet up well, I’ll say we are sorry, there’s nothing we can do for now,” Ifogah said.
INEC had earlier extended the CVR exercise by two weeks before it ended on Sunday.
However, Ifogah said the extension had already placed additional pressure on the commission as it prepares the voters’ register ahead of next year’s general elections.
“Even the extension by two weeks we gave is going to put us under pressure as a commission in preparing the register before the election,” he said.
He explained that INEC would require more than 75 days to prepare the final voters’ register after the conclusion of the registration exercise.
“From our timetable and activities, we need about 75 days plus to get these registers prepared right from when we stopped the registration,” Ifogah added.
