The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned a judgement directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties accused of failing to meet constitutional requirements.
In a unanimous decision, a three-member panel of the appellate court ruled that the Abuja High Court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the suit that resulted in the deregistration order.
The court consequently declared the 15 June judgement and the order directing INEC to deregister the affected political parties null and void.
The ruling effectively sets aside the earlier judgement and restores the parties’ status pending any further legal action.
