Team Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team have been downgraded from silver to bronze at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Canada successfully appealed its disqualification.
The Nigerian quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike initially received the silver medal despite finishing third in the final.
Canada, which finished second in 38.11 seconds behind gold medallists Australia, had initially been disqualified for an alleged lane infringement, allowing Nigeria to move up to second place.
The Canadian team had already celebrated its result in the mixed zone before officials announced the disqualification.
Canada subsequently lodged an appeal against the decision, delaying the medal presentation for the event.
The appeal was later upheld, prompting Commonwealth Games organisers to reverse the initial decision and restore Canada to second place. The official competition website has since been updated to reflect the revised standings.
As a result, Nigeria’s relay team have been moved back to third place and will now receive bronze medals.
Despite the setback, Team Nigeria have enjoyed a strong campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the country having won 23 medals so far.
Nigeria’s medal tally comprises 10 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals.
