President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening sports development and expanding opportunities for Nigerian athletes following Team Nigeria’s strong performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Nigeria concluded the Games with 24 medals, comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze, emerging as the highest-performing African nation at the competition.
Reacting to the achievement on Tuesday, the President praised the athletes for their resilience, discipline and determination, describing their success as a source of national pride.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the Federal Government would continue to invest in sports by improving training facilities, strengthening sporting institutions and creating an environment that enables athletes to compete successfully at continental and international events.
He said the administration remained committed to providing the necessary support to help Nigerian sportsmen and women realise their full potential on the global stage.
Congratulating Team Nigeria, the President said the athletes had represented the country with honour throughout the Games, adding that their medal haul reflected the dedication and perseverance they had demonstrated in competition.
Tinubu also expressed confidence that the experience gained in Glasgow would prepare the athletes for greater success at future international tournaments while inspiring more young Nigerians to pursue excellence through sport and national service.
He extended appreciation to the coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators and other support staff whose efforts contributed to Nigeria’s participation and achievements at the Games.
The President further commended the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their continued commitment to sports development and athlete welfare.
He encouraged members of Team Nigeria to remain focused and continue striving for greater success in future competitions.
