The Sultanate Council, Sokoto State Chapter, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448 AH on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The council made the call in a statement dated August 12 and signed by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.
According to the statement, Thursday, August 13, corresponds to the 29th day of Safar 1448 AH and has been designated for the sighting of the crescent marking the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal.
The council urged Muslims to actively search for the new moon and report any confirmed sighting through the appropriate traditional authorities.
“This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Thursday 13th August, 2026, which is equivalent to 29th day of Safar 1448AH shall be the day to look for the new moon of Rabiul Awwal 1448AH,” the statement read.
It directed anyone who sights the crescent to report it to the nearest district or village head for onward transmission to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
The council stated, “Muslims are therefore requested to start looking for the new moon of Rabiul Awwal 1448AH on Thursday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).”
The Sultanate Council prayed for divine guidance and assistance for Muslims as they carry out the religious responsibility.
“May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty, amen,” it added.
