Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced plans to establish an independent commission of inquiry into reported cases of extrajudicial killings and other acts of violence linked to the state’s governorship election.
Mr Adeleke made the announcement on Friday while addressing journalists in Osogbo. His speech was read on his behalf by the state Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi.
The governor said the commission would be constituted immediately after the election on Saturday, 15 August 2026, and would investigate reported killings and other violent incidents recorded during the election period.
He expressed condolences to the families of those who had lost their lives, stressing that political differences should never result in the loss of life.
“The Osun State Government expresses its deepest condolences to the families of all persons who have tragically lost their lives in incidents of violence during this election period,” Mr Adeleke said.
“Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation.”
According to the governor, the commission would determine the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents and recommend appropriate measures to ensure that those responsible were held accountable.
“The commission will establish the circumstances surrounding these incidents and recommend appropriate actions to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation, position or influence,” he said.
Mr Adeleke also promised that the state government would establish a framework to support and compensate families who had lost relatives in the violence.
He said the victims would be appropriately honoured, while urging residents to maintain unity beyond the election.
“The election will come and go, but we will remain one people. We owe the dead justice, their families compassion, and the people of Osun a peaceful future,” the governor said.
Osun has recorded several reported cases of killings and other violent incidents in recent months. Allegations have also emerged that suspected cult groups have been operating with the influence or protection of political actors in parts of the state.
The planned inquiry is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding such incidents and determine responsibility where evidence supports the allegations.
