The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, with the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, urging Nigerians to find and begin using their digital postcodes.

Tijani announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday, describing the initiative as a major step towards making locations across Nigeria easier to identify and connecting individuals and businesses to services and opportunities.

The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in the country.

According to the minister, the postcode provides a precise, Geographic Information System-enabled reference for identifying locations.

He said the system would make it easier for businesses to reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, while allowing families to provide accurate locations during emergencies.

Tijani also said the system could help government agencies deliver essential services more efficiently to communities.

He added that accurate postcodes would form part of the infrastructure required to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1tn economy.

The minister urged Nigerians to search for their postcodes through the official Digital Postcode website, postcode.gov.ng, and share them with family members, friends and businesses.

The digital postcode system identifies locations through five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building, with each addressable building assigned a unique code.

NIPOST had earlier said the digital postcode system would support services including deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce by providing a standard reference for locations.

The government is expected to encourage wider adoption of the system as businesses, public institutions and individuals begin incorporating the digital postcodes into their operations.
