The Senate on Thursday passed the Nigerian Employees’ Compensation Trust Fund Agency Establishment Bill, 2026, and the Federal Polytechnics Act Amendment Bill, 2026, following further legislative scrutiny and amendments.

The bills were recommitted to the Committee of the Whole for additional consideration before lawmakers examined and approved their provisions clause by clause.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who moved the motion for recommittal, said certain provisions of the bills required further review to ensure administrative clarity and establish a comprehensive legal framework.

He urged the Senate to rescind its earlier decisions on the bills and recommit them to the Committee of the Whole for further consideration and passage.

Seconding the motion, Senator Kamorudeen Oyewumi, representing Osun West Senatorial District, said the exercise would eliminate ambiguities and align the bills with existing laws establishing similar institutions.

The Senate subsequently considered the bills clause by clause and approved their provisions.

Explaining the purpose of the Nigerian Employees’ Compensation Trust Fund Agency Establishment Bill, Bamidele said the proposed legislation sought to repeal the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) Act and the Employees’ Compensation Act and replace them with a new framework.

According to him, the bill provides for compensation in cases of death, injury, disease or disability arising out of, or in the course of, employment.

The proposed legislation also addresses related matters concerning employees’ compensation and the administration of the new framework.

The passage of the two bills followed the Senate’s decision to review their provisions to improve clarity and ensure that the legislation aligns with the relevant legal and administrative requirements.
