The Federal Government has distributed relief materials to 610 families affected by flooding in Jigawa State, one year after the disaster displaced hundreds of households.

The intervention, carried out in collaboration with the Jigawa State Government, coincided with the end of the 2026 rainy season.

It also marked a second round of assistance to the victims, following the initial emergency response provided by the state government through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

The distribution exercise was monitored by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), SEMA and representatives of security agencies in the state.

Flagging off the distribution virtually on Saturday at the Warwade Internally Displaced Persons camp in Dutse, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Sankara, expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving the intervention.

“This delivery is a classical example of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s caring, love and compassion for the people of Jigawa State,” Sankara said.

He recalled that following last year’s flooding, SEMA responded within days to provide emergency assistance to hundreds of affected residents.

“That intervention included over 11,000 bags of 10kg and 25kg of rice, beans and maize, cash and other food items,” the commissioner said.

He added that agricultural inputs, including improved seeds, were also distributed to help affected farmers return to cultivation, secure another harvest and strengthen food security.

According to Sankara, the President subsequently approved additional assistance through NEMA to reduce the impact of the disaster and improve the livelihoods of residents affected by the floods.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Hannafi Yakubu, described the latest distribution as timely and well-targeted.
