Background check saves marriages from collapse – Experts

The essential role of pre-marital background check cannot be underestimated due to its potency in eradicating marital problems. This is the position of speakers at a webinar, which commemorated the 18th Anniversary of Background Check International (BCI), Nigeria’s foremost background check company.

The webinar focused on the role of back ground check in premarital relationship.

The webinar’s panelists were Managing Director EdFin Microfinance Bank, Mrs. Bunmi Lawson; legal practitioner/public affairs analyst, Barrister Peniela Akinyujoye; and chartered arbitrator/legal practitioner, Chief Adewale Adeniji.

BCI Chairman, Dr. Tunji Olugbodi said the webinar is the company’s worthy contribution to educate people and provide eye opening platform on lifelong issues and commitment. He enjoined young couples to be aware of the significant differences between marriages and weddings.

Adeniji said that navigating marriage successfully depends on a solid foundation, and that most issues could be curbed through background checks. He asserted that couples should be prepared adequately to face the challenges of marriage, and advocated the responsible use of pre-marital background check to verify issues before venturing into marriage.

Lawson urged couples to accept the outcome of pre-marital background checks. She highlighted that individual cultures, preferences and beliefs affect the success of marriages. Background check addresses history of domestic abuse/violence, criminal background and drug related offences.

Akintujoye advised young couples to face the issues of pre-marital background check. He urged them to do something concrete about pre-marital check to avoid depression in marriage. According to him, “emotions becloud the sense of reasoning of young people and as a result, unable to see red flags ahead”.

BCI’s Managing Director, Mr Kola Olugbodi stated that background check is an investment in the future of potential couples. He said that the issue of spouses with fraudulent and criminal background is on rise and pre-marital background check is a potent tool to identify such.

According to him, background check provides information on character, reputation, credit report and others.

He advised young people to ensure that they conduct through investigation and due diligence in order to overcome the odds. He further said: “Background check can provide almost 80 percent but the real work is with the parties involved in marriage”.

Although he asserted that background check is not a divine seal that marriage would work, but he explained that it helps to raise red flags in marriage even as some other issues might be hidden.

The Managing Director urged parents to discharge their roles and responsibilities in order to curtail some of the disheartening occurrences in the marriage of young people.
