It was a gathering of the crème de la crème of society at the 247th independence anniversary event of the United States of America held at the residence of the US Consul General, Will Stevens, in Ikoyi, Lagos, during the week.
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in this year’s election, Mr. Peter Obi; governors of Osun, Delta, and Bayelsa States, Senator Ademola Adeleke, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Duoye Diri respectively; as well as business mogul, Alhaji Aliko Dangote were among the notable dignitaries who graced the occasion.
The Charge D’Affairs of the United States Mission in Nigeria, David Greene was also at the event.
Obi, who was dressed in his signature black shirt and black shoes, exchanged pleasantries with several guests.
Dangote, who also adorned a black outfit, obviously had a good time too, as he could be seen chatting with Adeleke and other dignitaries.
The Erelu Kuti IV of Lagos, Abiola Dosunmu, was in her usual white outfit at the event. The stylish socialite took pictures, even as she interacted with other attendees at the event.
The guests had a lot of fun as the DJ serenaded them with music from top Nigerian artists, such as Davido, Burna Boy and Flavour.
Other attendees were Toyin, the wife of a former Governor of Kwara State and Senate President, Bukola Sakaraki; a former Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje; and a former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick.
In a post celebrating the US, Obi had written on Twitter, “I salute the government and citizens of the USA as they honour their history, heritage and perhaps, their most cherished national holidays. Although vastly different in age and size as democracies, the US and Nigeria share certain commonalities in terms of democratic aspirations, democratic principles, and diversity.
“As a people, Nigerians cherish the beauty of America as the hallmark of freedom and democracy. We admire the beauty of America’s diversity and its exemplary will to the master of its destiny. I wish the United States a happy 247th anniversary”.
Other notable personalities at the event were the Elegushi of Ikate-Elegushi kingdom of Lagos State, Oba Saheed Elegushi; popular author, Chimamanda Adichie; media personality, Dele Momodu; and entertainers, Broda Shaggi, D’Banj, Peter and Paul Okoye, aka P-Square.
