AFCON 2023: Bring trophy home, Sanwo-Olu charges, congratulates Super Eagles

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has congratulated the Super Eagles for advancing to the final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, the governor commended the Super Eagles for beating the Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 on penalties, after the the two sides played 1-1 for 120 minutes on Wednesday.

He said the Super Eagles fought gallantly to advance to the final, noting that the victory over South Africa is a testament to the determination, resilience and commitment of the team to winning the AFCON.

Sanwo-Olu praised the Super Eagles and technical crew for their brilliant performance.

“I am so proud of our Super Eagles for finding that extra tenacity to push through. From (Stanley) Nwabali with the in-match and penalty heroics to (William Troost)-Ekong to (Victor) Osimhen for taking initiative to help us score in the match and to the silent hero, Coach José Peseiro, everyone dug deep to give us this one”, he said.

The governor implored Nigerians, especially Lagos residents to come out in their millions to show support and solidarity to the Super Eagles during the final at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena and 26 other viewing centres across the state on Sunday.

On 10th January, Sanwo-Olu hosted the team to a special dinner at the Lagos House, Marina, just before their departure to Côte d’Ivoire for the tournament, which ends on Sunday with Nigeria facing the home side in the final.
