The management, players, and fans of the 20 clubs of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have received commendations for a weekend of great sportsmanship and a great atmosphere of the Matchday 21 fixtures.

Two sides – Doma United and Akwa United – lost their home games while there were three drawn matches in Benin, Jos, and Ilorin.

Reviewing the weekend games, NPFL’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi observed that it represented the best of the character of NPFL fans.

He disclosed that reports reaching his desk from various centres had no disputes or complaints about officiating.

“It is my resolve to highlight these positives because that is a sure way to encourage the right attitudes in our fans and sportsmanship in the players”, the former Nigerian international said.

“While it is not unusual for a team to lose on its ground, the fact that no unsavoury incidents were recorded after Rangers defeated Doma United in Gombe and Bayelsa won Akwa United in Eket,  is reason to believe that our  message of peace is reaching the targets.

“I equally want to commend our match Referees who have been doing their best without the aid of technology and we look forward to assisting them to do much better with the provision of technological aids in the near future”.

Kano Pillars had the biggest win at the weekend – 5-1 against Sunshine Stars – while Gombe United beat Sporting Lagos 2-0 in Gombe. Heartland lost 0-1 in Lafia to Lobi Stars, while Niger Tornadoes won 1-0 against Abia Warriors.

The season continues midweek with nine fixtures as Rivers United games are put on hold due to their CAF Confederation Cup engagements.
