The Super Eagles boosted their chances of emerging from the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with victory over host nation, Côte d’Ivoire.

Captain William Troost-Ekong converted from the spot in the 55th minute following a penalty won by Africa’s footballer of the year, Victor Osimhen.

It proved to be the only goal of the match and pushed Nigeria from third on the log to second, sharing the same points (four) with Equatorial Guinea.

The Guineans had smashed another Guinean team – Guinea-Bissau – 4-2 to top the table on goal difference.

Côte d’Ivoire have three points from two matches and will face Equatorial Guinea on Monday in the last group game, while Nigeria take on whipping side Guinea-Bissau,  who lost their first two fixtures.

Later tonight, Ghana will seek their first points of the competition when they engage Egypt in Group B.
