Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has earned $75,000 after finishing second in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday.
Amusan clocked 12.34 seconds to claim the silver medal behind American Masai Russell, who won the race in 12.22 seconds to take the $150,000 top prize.
The Nigerian advanced to the final after finishing second in her semi-final in 12.49 seconds.
She was narrowly beaten by Devynne Charlton, who won the semi-final in 12.45 seconds, but the Bahamian finished fourth in the final in 12.40 seconds.
Russell, who also posted the fastest time in the semi-finals, completed a dominant outing by securing the championship title and $150,000 winner’s purse.
For Amusan, the silver medal rounds off a season in which she has continued to compete at the highest level despite losing her long-standing world record to Russell in Zurich.
The result marked the third consecutive occasion Russell has finished ahead of Amusan this season.
Russell previously defeated the Nigerian at the Zurich Diamond League, where she broke Amusan’s world record of 12.12 seconds.
In Zurich, Russell clocked a stunning 12.09 seconds at the Letzigrund Stadium, taking three hundredths of a second off Amusan’s previous world record.
Russell also finished ahead of Amusan at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, where the Nigerian placed fourth.
Before Russell’s record-breaking performance, Amusan had held the women’s 100m hurdles world record for four years after running 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
