Amusan finishes 4th at Xiamen Diamond League

World record holder in women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, opened her 2025 outdoor season with a fourth-place finish at the Diamond League opener in Xiamen, China on Saturday.

In what was her first hurdles race since the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Nigerian finished in a time of 12.74s in the race that was won by reigning world champion Danielle Williams in 12.53s.

The USA’s Grace Stark was second in 12.58s while South Africa’s Marione Fourie was third in 12.62s.

Williams produced a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the race, launching a furious late surge to overtake Grace Stark of the United States just before the finish line.

Meanwhile, World Indoor Champion Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas saw her race end prematurely after clipping a hurdle early, resulting in a did not finish (DNF).

For Amusan, she has been listed as part of Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m relay team for the World Relays in Guangzhou, China next month and might remain in the Asian country till then as the next event on the Diamond League calendar is the Yangtze River Delta Athletics Diamond Gala at the China Textile City Sports Centre on 3 May.

Before her hurdles debut for this season, she returned to the track in the 100m last month, running a season’s best of 11.28s to win the Velocity Fest 16 in Kingston, Jamaica.

She also worked with Usain Bolt’s coach, Glen Mills, during the off-season, sending signals of a strong comeback after a disappointing end to last season.

The 28-year-old is a three-time Diamond League winner with consecutive triumphs in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
