Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Diri, who announced this on Wednesday at the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, held at the state Government House, Yenagoa, said his decision was for an obvious reason, but did not state the reason or the political party to which he will be moving.
‘After extensive consultations, today, 15 October 2025, I wish to notify you that, in keeping with the extant protocols, I, Governor Douye Diri, do hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party’, he announced.
The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo was absent, but the governor said all those not present at the meeting were on official assignments.
He also said that the chairmen of all the local councils would move with him.
In a post on his Facebook page, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah said Diri resigned from the PDP with the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, along with all the 20 PDP members in the 24-member state legislature.
The House also has three All Progressives Congress (APC) members, and one from the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Ingobere said that the PDP does not have the ability to present a presidential candidate and win the 2027 election.
Diri’s resignation from the PDP brings to an end months of speculation over his alleged move to the APC, but Alabrah did not state the political party he would join.
It was also reported that the governor has submitted his resignation letter to the party.
It is believed that all SEC members had resigned alongside the governor.
When contacted on the development, Alabrah said he could not talk. ‘I cannot talk now’, he said.
The state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, did not pick up his calls.
