Nigeria striker Victor Boniface has dismissed speculation about his fitness after completing a loan move to Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen.

The 24-year-old joined Bremen on transfer deadline day after a medical, ending a summer of uncertainty in which proposed moves to AC Milan fell through.

Boniface, who played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning season in 2023-24, was officially unveiled by Bremen this week.

When asked about his physical condition, he insisted there was no truth to rumours questioning his readiness.

‘Who’s questioning my fitness? If I wasn’t fully fit, I’d be in a hospital bed, not sitting here talking to you’, Boniface said.

‘Whatever the media say, that’s their business. If my body isn’t 100%, I won’t be here talking to you’.

The forward has scored 32 goals and provided 12 assists since joining Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in 2023.

He has also made 13 appearances for Nigeria, and yet to find the net in both friendly and official games. Coach Eric Chelle omitted him from the country’s squad for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

Boniface now begins a new chapter with Bremen, who turned to him as part of their attacking reinforcements for the Bundesliga campaign.
