President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the Chairman of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee (CECC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State to return to his position.
With that directive, the Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani-Bello ceased to be the acting interim chairman of the party.

The Yobe State Governor’s appointment on 25th June 2020 followed the dissolution of the party’s National Working Committee as a result of the crisis that rocked the tenure of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as National Chairman.

The primary mandate of the Buni caretaker committee and extraordinary national convention was to stabilise the party and conduct a national convention within a short time.

Almost two years later, the APC has witnessed twists and turns resulting in a serial postponement of its convention.

With President Buhari’s intervention, the cloud around the 26th March national convention may now have been cleared.

Many APC Governors had backed Governor Sani-Bello, who is a member of the caretaker committee representing the Northcentral.

But, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena urged Governor Sani-Bello to stop his alleged plan to call a meeting of the National Executive Committee without the authorisation of the CECC Chairman.

Nabena said then: ‘I am using this medium to call on our leaders across the states to caution Governor Sani-Bello.

‘The Presidency should also call him to order to immediately drop the plan to convene a NEC meeting without the knowledge of Governor Mai Mala Buni and the Secretary of the CECC

‘The likes of Governor Bello are working against our party and to cause anarchy in the ruling APC.

‘Governor Sani Bello is neither the Chairman nor Secretary of the National Caretaker Committee. So, where did he get the power to convey such a meeting’?

Following a meeting with Governor Buni in London on Wednesday, President wrote to the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Governor Atiku Bagudu expressing concern about the multiplicity of cases currently rocking the party, concluding that they had the prospect of invalidating the activities and actions of the party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The letter, which was also copied to the CEC Chairman, its Acting Chairman, the Director General of the Directorate of State Security as well as the Inspector General of Police, the President said that since the party could not change the leadership of the CECC without infringing on the time limit set by INEC, and the fact that the current uncertainties and controversies ‘pose a real threat to the party’, he had directed that ‘the issue of the leadership of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee (CECC) should immediately return to status quo ante’.
The President further wrote: ‘All members of the Governors Forum and their followers should desist from any behaviour or utterance that will likely lead to disunity in the ranks of the party, and ultimately jeorpadise the transition to the convention.
‘The Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee should accordingly be allowed to proceed with all necessary preparations to hold the convention as planned- unfailingly on 26th March, 2022’.
