President Buhari has earlier conferred Tinubu with Nigeria’s highest national honour – the Grand Commander of Order of Federal Republic (GCFR).
The Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima was also decorated with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Tinubu becomes the 16th awardee of the GCFR, including three foreign citizens – former South African president, Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II and former Libya military leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The Nigerians included former Presidents/Heads of State Shehu Shagari, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Ibrahim Babangida, Goodluck Jonathan, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Olusegun Obasanjo, Sani Abacha, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Ernest Shonekan.
The others are Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Moshood Abiola and the incumbent, Buhari.
The Chairman of the Presidential Transition Committee, Boss Mustapha described the event as historically significant to the country and the international community, particularly Africa because of the democratic values and lessons in nationhood.
Mustapha, who is also Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said that “it was for these reasons, the committee chose Nigeria: Better Together, as the theme for the 2023 transition”.
