Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan missed out on a third consecutive Commonwealth Games women’s 100m hurdles title after finishing third in Thursday’s final.
The world record holder clocked 12.60 seconds to claim the bronze medal, behind Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, who won gold in 12.33 seconds, and Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds, who secured silver in 12.41 seconds.
Amusan entered the final as the favourite after recording the fastest season’s best in the field at 12.28 seconds. She also impressed in her heat, winning in a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds ahead of South Africa’s Marione Fourie (12.50) and Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill (12.69).
However, the Nigerian was unable to replicate that performance in the final as Charlton produced a commanding run to deny her a third successive Commonwealth title.
The 29-year-old arrived in Glasgow in strong form after finishing second at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, where she set the world record of 12.12 seconds in 2022. She has matched her season’s best of 12.28 seconds on three occasions this year and has won Diamond League meetings in Paris and Rabat.
Amusan claimed her first Commonwealth Games title at the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia, becoming the first Nigerian woman to win the women’s 100m hurdles event. She successfully defended the title at Birmingham 2022, setting a Games record of 12.30 seconds.
Although the bronze medal ended her bid for a third consecutive Commonwealth crown, Amusan remains among the world’s leading sprint hurdlers.
She is expected to return to the Diamond League circuit ahead of the season finale in Brussels on 4 and 5 September, where she will attempt to regain the title she won three years in succession between 2021 and 2023.
