The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 4,143.5 kilogrammes of Cannabis Indica with an estimated street value of N26.5 billion concealed inside imported vehicles in a 40-foot container at Apapa Port in Lagos.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Apapa Command, Emmanuel Oshoba, disclosed this on Friday, saying the seizure was made during a routine examination of the container in collaboration with officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to Oshoba, the 40-foot container, marked FANU1933352, was subjected to a thorough inspection on 10 July, 2026, during which officers discovered three imported vehicles concealing the illicit substance.

He said the container held a red 2015 Nissan Micra, a black 2019 Toyota Corolla and a grey 2015 Toyota Corolla, alongside 162 bags containing 8,287 parcels of Cannabis Indica, each weighing 500 grammes.

Oshoba explained that four bags of the substance were concealed inside the Nissan Micra, while the remaining 158 bags were hidden beneath the floor of the container and in spaces between the three vehicles. He added that no illicit substances were found inside the other two vehicles.

He said the seizure was made in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other relevant laws.

The Customs Area Controller said the interception underscored the Apapa Command’s commitment to preventing the importation of prohibited items, particularly illicit drugs that pose threats to public health, safety and national security.

He added that the operation was in line with the zero-tolerance policy of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Dr Bashir Adeniyi, against all forms of illicit trade through the nation’s ports.

Oshoba reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to facilitating legitimate trade while maintaining strict enforcement against the importation of prohibited and restricted goods.

He also commended officers involved in the operation for their diligence and professionalism.

“This seizure once again demonstrates our unwavering commitment to ensuring that only lawful trade thrives at Apapa Port.

“As we intensify investigations into the matter, I want to reiterate that this command has made the port a no-go area for anything prohibited under our laws.

“I also want to reassure compliant traders that they will continue to enjoy the trade facilitation incentives provided by the Nigeria Customs Service,” Oshoba said.
