Danish aid worker, Anja Ringgren Loven, has shared new photos of a young girl rescued from the streets of Akwa Ibom State after being accused of witchcraft, beaten and abandoned.

In a Facebook post shared on Friday, Loven said the child, identified as Christiana, was found earlier this year and has since undergone months of medical care and psychological therapy.

According to her, Christiana was ostracised after being branded a witch, a stigma that forced her to live on the streets in harsh conditions.

‘Christiana was rescued earlier this year. She had to get medical support and therapy to recover from the trauma of being rejected, beaten, and abused.

‘When a child is accused of being a witch, they will be outcast by society and end up on the street’, she wrote.

She added that after eight months of intensive rehabilitation, Christiana has now regained her strength and recently began attending school.

She wrote, ‘Street life is brutal, and not many survive. After eight months of intense therapy and medical treatment, Christiana is finally strong enough and started school this week!’
