Forrmer Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Lagos State, Dr Adedeji Doherty has described Mr Tunji Disu’s appointment as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) as strategic.
Doherty, Deputy National Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, made the remark in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos.
He said President Bola Tinubu made a deserving choice that would strengthen policing and enhance public security nationwide.
According to him, the appointment reflects the public desire for a modern, professional and people-centred police service.
‘The choice of newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu, by President Bola Tinubu is well-considered and well-deserving.
‘President Tinubu must have considered Disu a fitting successor to Kayode Egbetokun in actualising the desire for a refined, people-centred police service.
‘He must have closely observed him during his leadership of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos State’, he said.
The PDP chieftain said Disu’s tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad recorded significant achievements in crime reduction across Lagos.
‘His tenure witnessed a sharp decline in city crimes, as he motivated officers to confront criminals in their hideouts wherever identified.
‘This is what Lagosians and Nigerians expect him to replicate at the national level.
‘Disu has a proud track record as a distinguished officer with high moral principles and respect for human dignity’, he said.
He said the elevation had been widely applauded, describing the development as heartening for people of Lagos State.
A Lagos State indigene has emerged as police chief 24 years after the tenure of Musiliu Smith.
‘While I congratulate the new I-G on his well-deserved elevation, I wish him a successful tenure leading the Nigeria Police Force’, Doherty said.
