The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged opposition politicians to assess President Bola Tinubu’s administration on its policies and performance, arguing that political differences should not prevent them from recognising decisions that could benefit Nigeria.

Wike made the call on Wednesday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) in Abuja, attended by party leaders, governors and other political stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, the former Rivers State governor reaffirmed his identity as a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while explaining his support for Tinubu. He argued that party loyalty should not stop politicians from acknowledging government initiatives they consider beneficial to the country.

He also rejected opposition criticisms portraying the Tinubu administration as lacking direction, maintaining that the President had shown a willingness to confront difficult national challenges that previous governments had struggled to resolve.

On security, the FCT minister expressed confidence in the administration’s ability to tackle insecurity. He singled out the proposed establishment of state police as a reform that could improve security management across the country.

The proposal for state policing remains a subject of national debate, with questions surrounding constitutional provisions, funding, accountability and the division of responsibilities between federal and state authorities.

Wike also challenged members of the Presidential Campaign Council to translate their appointments and political influence into tangible results within their respective areas of responsibility. He stressed the importance of demonstrating impact rather than relying solely on official positions.

A review of the inauguration by the Media and Publicity Team of the Forum of Chief Executives of Federal Parastatals (FORCEPA) identified Wike’s remarks as one of the notable contributions to the event.

The inauguration brought together political figures from different parties, including Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, and Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

According to the FORCEPA Media and Publicity Team, the gathering provided an opportunity to examine perspectives on governance, public accountability, security reforms and the relationship between political competition and national development.

The Forum emphasised the need for public assessments of government performance to be grounded in verifiable policies, measurable outcomes and the everyday experiences of Nigerians across different sectors.

Wike’s remarks placed renewed emphasis on the distinction between partisan opposition and objective scrutiny of government performance, with the minister urging political actors to consider the substance of policies alongside their party affiliations.
