Rivers United manager, Stanley Eguma is certain his club would qualify for the Super 6 playoff despite losing 2-3 to Group B top rivals, Lobi Stars midweek in a rescheduled Matchday 11 fixture in Jos.
With that defeat of the title holders, Lobi Stars hold firmly the No 1 spot in the section having established a six-point gap over second placed Rivers United. The Pride of Rivers however have a game on hand – at home to Sunshine Stars.
Eguma, who blamed the loss in the Plateau State capital on tactical errors, said the team have not lost sight of retaining their title and would remain focused.
The Port Harcourt-based side recently qualified for the knockout stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after emerging second behind Ivorien champions ASEC Mimosas and having been drawn to play Young Africans of Tanzania in the two-legged last eight.
After their defeat to Lobi Stars in Jos, Eguma noted: “it is an abridged league after which teams will qualify to go for Super 6 and we are still on course for a position in the Super 6, we’ve not lost sight and focus”.
“We are the defending champions and I believe that at the end of the day, we will be able to come out as one of the candidates to play in the Super 6 and that is our target”.
He described the match as balanced while alluding to the five yellow cards and one expulsion as a possible reason the game tilted to the opponent’s favour.
