Four out of the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where elections were conducted on Saturday have their results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as at 8:20 am Sunday.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) won three council chairmanship seats, while the remaining was claimed by the People Democratic Party (PDP).
APC’s Hon. Christopher Maikalangu was re-elected Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) with 40,295 votes against his closest rival — Dr. Paul Moses — who had 12,109 votes, while PDP’s Dantani Zanda had 3,398 votes.
According to the Collation officer for AMAC, Andrew Abueo, out of the 65,197 votes in the chairmanship election, 62,861 were valid.
He added that 837,338 voters were registered in the area council.
In Bwari area council, APC’s Joshua Ishaku emerged victorious in the chairmanship election only five days after he was cleared by the Supreme Court to contest the election.
According to the returning officer, Prof. Mohammed Nurudeen, Ishaku recorded 18,466 votes to win, while ADC polled 4,254 votes, and the Zenith Labour Party got 3,515 votes.
The chairmanship election was conducted in 10 wards of the council: Igu, Shere, Dutse, Ushafa, Byazhin, Kuduru, Kubwa, Usuma, Bwari central and Kawu.
On 16 February, the Supreme Court had affirmed Ishaku as the lawful chairmanship candidate of the APC for the area council election.
The apex court nullified the majority judgement of the appellate court, which had recognised Haruna Audi as the party’s candidate.
At the appellate court, the majority decision had upheld the Federal High Court’s decision dismissing Ishaku’s suit on the ground that it was statute-barred.
However, the Supreme Court justices upheld the dissenting judgement of Justice Okon Abang, which declared Ishaku as the rightful candidate of the APC.
The apex court, therefore, directed INEC to publish Ishaku’s name as the APC candidate for the election.
Daniel Nuhu of the APC won the Kwali Area Council chairmanship election with 16,656 votes.
INEC announced that Nuhu secured victory across a majority of the wards to defeat PDP’s Haruna Pai, who polled 8,467 votes to come second in the election.
Elections were conducted in all 10 wards of area council on Saturday.
In Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim of the PDP won the chairmanship election with 22,165 votes.
The Returning Officer, Prof. Philip Akpeni, who announced the results of the poll on Sunday in Gwagwalada, said: ‘I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship held on 21 February 2026.
‘That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having certified the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected’.
Akpeni also said that APC candidate, Mr Yahaya Usman scored a total of 17,788 votes, while Mr. Biko Umar of All Progressives Grand Alliance scored 1, 687 to come third place.
The chairmanship election was conducted in 10 wards of the council — Paiko, Dobi, Gwako, Ibwa, Staff Quaters, Zuba, Ikwa, Kutunku, Gwagwalada Centre and Tunga Maje.
The results of Abaji and Kuje area council are being awaited.
