FIFA rankings: Super Falcons drop 2 places, retain top spot in Africa

The first FIFA ranking of the women’s national teams for 2024 was officially released by world football governing body with the Super Falcons experienced a downward slide.

According to the rankings, the nine-time African champions drop two spots from 32nd to 34th position.

Despite the drop, the Falcons maintained their stronghold as the leading team in Africa, retaining the coveted title of being the number one team on the continent.

In the African rankings, Falcons maintained top spot are followed by reigning African champions, South Africa who moved up one spot as Banyana Banyana occupied the 51st position.

Morocco are third in Africa occupy 58th position in the world having moved up two steps while in fourth position is Ghana having dropped five places to be ranked fourth in the continent and 65th in the world.

Zambia who rose up five spots to take the 65th place globally in the list are the fifth best team in Africa.

Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Mali and Equatorial Guinea complete the list of Africa’s top 10 teams.

Meanwhile, world champions, Spain retained their spot at the summit in the global rankings, followed by England, France and USA.

The slight decline in the FIFA rankings for the Super Falcons does not diminish their stature as one of the continent’s powerhouses in women’s football. With their continued dominance in Africa and a strong presence on the global stage, the Falcons remain a force to be reckoned with, poised to uphold Nigeria’s legacy in women’s football for years to come.
