Football-for-peace tournament kicks off in Kaduna 1st July

The second edition of Croccity Soccer League, the first 5-a -side football league in the northern part of Nigeria, will hold from 1st July to 1st October, this year at the grounds of Murtala Muhammed Square, Kaduna.

Known this time as the Croccity Football for Peace Tournament 2022, the competition is organised by DefMedia in partnership with the Kaduna State Ministry of Sports Development.

The winning team will be rewarded with N2 million, while the runner-up will have N1 million with N500,000 for the third placed team.

Registration fee for the competition is N20,000.

DefMedia’s Head of Events, Mr Kelly Eruka said that more than 150 teams are expected to feature in the qualifiers that will be played in the three senatorial zones of Kaduna State. “The tournament will also witness the first female league”, he said.

In the three months the competition will last, over 100,000 spectators are expected to watch the matches.

The event is expected to be graced by the tournament’s Patron, Isha Johansen, who is a member of FIFA Council and the CAF Executive Committee. A former President of the Sierra Leonean Football Association, Johansen was one of only two women to have headed a football federation in the world.

Other major football stakeholders expected included the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick and top Kaduna State Government officials.

The maiden edition of the tournament was held last November at the Ahmed Musa Neighborhood Centre, Kaduna with 32 teams participating and 10,000 fans in attendance.

Young Eagle won the grand prize of N500,000.

The success of that edition motivated the Kaduna State Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Idris Nyam, who attended the final, to commit the state government to partner with DefMedia, the event organisers and owners of Hyai 89.5FM , the No 1 urban radio station in Kaduna State.
