France secured their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday, producing a composed display that underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites.
Didier Deschamps’ side dominated proceedings from the outset, enjoying the lion’s share of possession and pinning Sweden deep inside their own half for long spells. Although Les Bleus created a series of openings, they had to wait until the closing moments of the first half to make the breakthrough.
Captain Kylian Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 45th minute, finishing confidently after being picked out by Ousmane Dembélé. The goal was a deserved reward for France’s sustained pressure and ensured they headed into the interval with a valuable advantage.
France continued to dictate the contest after the restart and extended their lead eight minutes into the second half. Michael Olise’s perfectly weighted pass found Bradley Barcola, who kept his composure to slot beyond the Swedish goalkeeper and make it 2-0.
Sweden attempted to force their way back into the match but struggled to break down a disciplined French defence, while the 2018 world champions remained dangerous on the counter-attack.
Mbappé wrapped up the victory in the 74th minute, calmly converting another excellent delivery from Olise to claim his second goal of the evening and seal an emphatic win.
“It was a great team performance. We showed focus and quality,” Mbappé said after the final whistle.
Olise was one of France’s standout performers, registering two assists and providing a constant creative spark in the final third, while Barcola’s energetic display was rewarded with a well-taken goal.
Sweden battled throughout the contest but found it difficult to cope with France’s movement and attacking quality, creating few clear-cut opportunities against a well-organised defence.
