The management of the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTA Teaching Hospital) has announced plans to take legal action against members of staff allegedly involved in a job racketeering scheme targeting unsuspecting job seekers.
According to the hospital, the suspects allegedly collected between ₦200,000 and ₦600,000 from applicants in exchange for fake promises of employment. The victims were reportedly issued fraudulent appointment letters purportedly bearing the name of the institution.
The allegations were disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by the hospital’s Head of the Public Relations Unit, Mr Tope Fayehun.
The statement revealed that the management had received reports that individuals posing as senior officials of the hospital had demanded money and other forms of gratification from job seekers with assurances of securing employment at the newly established hospital.
“According to information available to the management, the affected applicants allegedly paid sums ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦600,000 and were issued with purported appointment letters in the name of the management of the UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Akure,” the statement said.
The hospital further disclosed that some of the victims, whose identities were withheld, have begun demanding refunds after discovering that the promised appointments into the Federal Government establishment would not materialise.
In response to the allegations, the management said it would pursue appropriate legal action against those found to be involved in the alleged fraud.
It also pledged to cooperate fully with relevant law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies by providing all available information and evidence to support ongoing investigations.
The hospital urged members of the public and prospective job applicants to remain vigilant and to verify any recruitment information through official channels before making payments or responding to employment offers.
