Guards Brigade explains how corps member died in Abuja

The Guards Brigade Nigerian Army has clarified circumstances surrounding the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Mr Abdulsamad Jamiu, during an armed robbery incident in Dei-Dei, Abuja.

In a statement on Sunday, the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Guards Brigade, Lt. Olawuyi Odunola, said the corps member was fatally caught in crossfire during an exchange between troops and fleeing armed robbers.

Odunola explained that troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol in the early hours of 25 April when they responded to a distress call from Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, following reports of an ongoing robbery attack.

She added that in the course of the engagement, the deceased corps member was caught in the crossfire and later succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to save his life.

‘Upon arrival, the troops came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in a brief but intense exchange’, she said.

The brigade spokesperson described the incident as tragic and deeply regrettable, noting that troops were operating in a volatile and rapidly evolving situation while attempting to protect residents.

She said the situation was fluid and highly dangerous as troops worked to repel the attackers and safeguard lives and property’, the statement said.

According to her, the Commander, Guards Brigade, officers and soldiers expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all those affected by the loss.

She said a thorough investigation had been initiated to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring that findings would be made public.

Odunola added that the remains of the deceased had been handed over to appropriate authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

She reaffirmed the Guards Brigade’s commitment to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, pledging to review its operational procedures to further enhance civilian safety.

She also urged residents to remain calm and continue to cooperate with security agencies in maintaining peace and security.

The incident has sparked concern among residents of the area, highlighting ongoing security challenges in parts of the FCT.
