Highlife legend, Pa Mike Ejeagha, whose old song, Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo went viral after being revived last year, died in Enugu on Friday night.

He was known for transforming Igbo folklore and proverbs into captivating music.

His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha said that his father died at about 8 pm at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness.

Mike Ejeagha was a dominant voice on Nigerian airwaves in the 1980s with his unique style of Igbo folk music that resonated across generations.

Skit maker Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie (popularly known as Brain Jotter) brought the resurgence of Ejeagha’s 41-year-old song, Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo. The folk highlife song tells a story of how the tortoise deceived the elephant, rode on it, and used it to pay the dowry of its bride.

His comic dance of Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo and videos on TikTok and Instagram had over 9.1 million followers on Facebook and more than five million followers on Instagram.

The dance moves became a challenge, with many people creating different versions of it on different social media platforms.
